Medieval Synthesis

During the Medieval Period, class structure was highly important. The king was of first importance followed by knights and tradesmen were towards the bottom. However, some tradesmen became highly wealthy due to their special skills or because they were merchants who traded goods. As trade routes developed, merchants started to trade to bigger cities like Paris. The wealth of some merchants was obvious in the way their houses were decorated. Some had castle-like homes with elaborated painted woodwork. They were constructed from luxurious Roman glass and were extremely ornate. The way in which the houses were built are in a sense an art form.

Medieval Synthesis Question

During the Medieval Period, people decided to branch out with their beliefs and really began to get a stronger grip on them. As we learned in past periods, such as the Anglo-Saxon and Greek eras, they did not really have a set belief but during the medieval period, ones belief played a tremendous role in how they were thought of and viewed in the eyes of the public. With the help of this new ‘set-in-stone’ religion, people were taught to show a commitment towards themselves. In other words, their commitment to their religion taught them to have a commitment to the things they did in life. Consider their religion. At the time, people were intensely focused on believing in one God and making promises to him about their lives and the actions they took part in. A knight does a good job of exemplifying this medieval mindset because a knight was someone who worked hard and lived with honor, accomplishing great but dangerous tasks in order to live a successful life, while also staying committed to certain morals such as chastity. We also know that peasants were looked down upon because they were not necessarily the type of people who were committed to making their lives better, which was not socially acceptable. So in conclusion, religion taught people to grow and show a sort of dedication toward their lives and making their lives better. We can see that the growth of the medieval period was due, in part, to religion because many paintings were mostly of religious figures and architecture at the time was known for the many churches that were being built. They were built to be gigantic, stunning and breathtaking. The prevalence of religion in medieval art shows that it not only drove the people and society to change but inspired the arts as well.

Asher.p4.t1.Medieval

In the 13th century, tradesmen were allowed to emerge in the Medieval Era mainly due to thedownfall of the Feudal system. This decline of the Feudal system acted as a catalyst for the growth ofcities. The growth of cities led to more demand of luxury goods, and this eventually brought wealth formerchants and tradesmen. However, once the Plague hit, the economy heavily fluctuated. The Plaguecaused labor shortages, and led to the demand of higher wages from existing laborers. This small groupof people became wealthy and had had the money and the leisure to demand luxury goods. In the early15th century, the Plague started to decline and the population started to grow. Because of the demands of the wealthy group of people, tradesmen and merchants as well as other groups of people were ableto emerge.
The artist of this painting clearlydivided the painting into three sections byplacing three different designs of borders ontop of the painting. In the middle, there arewealthy people dressed in luxurious clothes. To the right, there are merchants andtradesmen selling goods. To the left, there is agroup of masters and servants, but do notmistake this for serfdom. Though serfdom, apart of the Feudal system, declined, servantsstill existed in wealthy families. He made themiddle section the brightest, then the right-hand side, then the left-hand side. This use of lighttechnique shows that he wanted to emphasize the importance of the wealthy class and show how theyimpacted the merchants and the economy. This painting of a typical city clearly represents the economyexplained previously in the first paragraph.
