Wylie.P5.T7.Greek/Roman

In the Roman classical era, buildings and paintings were huge parts of their society. Many paintings didn’t survive the Roman classical world, but those that did survive were saved by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. One example of a painting from this era is “Winged Figure, The Market, Pompeii, 1998”. This painting appeared in Pompeii after the earthquake in 62 AD. This painting followed the ornamental style of drawing from the Augustan period in the first century BC. This style consisted of a more “gallery” feel to it, where the main image would be focused in the middle. Surrounding the main image would usually be smaller images and drawing or a simple shadowing effect. In “Winged Figure” is depicts a divine being floating down and calling upon the spirits of the land. This painting was found drawn on a wall, showing early civilization and was possibly located in a scared location. The painting has similar traits to that of the “Relief of the Apotheosis of Emperor Antoninus Pius and his Wife, Faustina, 161 AD”, which was also created by Romans. This piece of art was etched into marble as a large statue, resembling the same winged figure in the “Winged Figure” painting in 1998. These two pieces of art clearly show that the Romans believed in Gods and “winged figures” that would protect them. Sadly, these pieces of art don’t really show what the science was during the periods in which both pieces of art were made.

Your group wrote about the painting "Winged Figure" and how it related to society. However there were several errors that led to confusion while reading. In the second sentence, you say that paintings survived due to the eruption of a volcano. You also say that the painting was created in 1998, yet found in AD 62. We assume that the painting was made around AD 62 since this is a response concerning the greek and roman era, so why do you insist on adding 1998 throughout the response. Your group did a good job of provoking imagery by describing the painting in depth. The comparison between "Winged Figure" and “Relief of the Apotheosis of Emperor Antoninus Pius and his Wife, Faustina" was exceptional because it proved the widespread belief in angels. If our group had this work of art to research, we would have discussed more of how the painting shows the aesthetics of society. The prompt also requires the work of art to show how science played a role in society - a part of the question that should have been taken into consideration whilst picking the work of art to research. For the next synthesis question, focus more on answering the prompt with strong analysis and research, and be sure your group peer edits the work before you submit it.
