As society progressed into the Enlightenment era, it was obvious that the reliance on the upper class and royalty was decreasing. What people had once relied on for protection in a barbaric society no longer seemed to be needed due to civilization. Thus, the progressive thinkers criticized society in a nonconformist perspective. What people had relied on at the Medieval and Renaissance Era no longer applied to the capitalistic European countries that now existed. What the capitalistic society provided economically was the rise of individualism where people’s own wealth relied on themselves. So, reliance upon upper class was not needed but criticized. Many progressive thinkers began to shift their thoughts from the differences of the wealthy and the poor to the similarities. As a result, John Locke wrote that all individuals had the right to life, liberty and property and Voltaire argued that people had the right to choose what they wanted to believe. Writers such as these caused epiphanies to the people regarding their own individual rights and the extent of their government’s power.
Many writers took advantage of this time to criticize the society and the mannerism of the time. William Wycherley writes The Plain Dealer to show how everyone in society is deceitful and two faced. These ideas and method that writers used affected the sensibility of the era.

Your answer is well written, but I feel like there needs to be more detail. You need to include more from the research answers, if that is already included...well your research questions need work. You mention philosophers, but that's all you do. Try to go more into depth with your synthesis answer next time. Furthermore, your last sentence is some what of a cliff hanger. Exactly how did "these ideas and methods writers used affect the sensibility?"
ReplyDeleteWell, that's pretty much it. Your answer was okay overall, it flowed and gave great examples, but didn't explain the examples that were chosen.
Despite, this being a difficult topic to write on we, team 3 of period 1 Wylie, feel that your group could have written more in depth about certain topics. Your group just briefly skims over the lowering reliance on the upper class. This a very important topic in this era because this was the start of the growing middle class. Not only, did the common people start being able obtain literature due to the printing press, but also they shared their opinions of that literature with others. This was the first of its type in history and it should have more definitely be talked about with more emphasis.
ReplyDeleteBeyond the lack of depth in your response to the synthesis question, your overall coverage was wonderful. As stated before, your group covers the reliance on the upper class. Your group also covers the "evolution" of society, literature, writers, and artists of this era.
What we thought your group did an excellent job on your examples. Your examples of authors and literature of that era flowed great with what you are talking about, such as Voltaire and William Wycherley with The Plain Dealer.
Overall, we felt you did a good job, but there is of course, as for everyone, room for improvement. Just elaborate more on a few topics rather than briefly skimming over several topics. If your group does this, we feel that your responses to the research questions and synthesis questions will improve as a whole.
