Asher.p4.t9 Romantic Synthesis Question

The romantic era came into being as the backlash of the previous era. The people in this era, sick of the cold-hearted, social Darwinist disregard of the common man and the rationalization of the natural world through science, began a culture shift towards emotion and imagination. Strong emotions such as terror, fright and awe were used to create bold new aesthetic experiences. Writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe both used dark mysterious tones for their writings, as well as the presence of the supernatural. As a response to the age of reason’s strict political and socioeconomic structure, romantic era writers and artists gave a stronger emphasis to the common man. The oil painting Liberty Leading the People drawn by Eugène Delacroix to honor the French Revolution of 1830, is a secular representation of the freedom that was to be obtained from a bloody conflict. In it the the well dressed man with the top hat, the straggly black man with the saber in his hand a pistol on his waist and the young man with a bag hanging from his shoulder are all fighting together, an inspiring depiction the middle and lower class joining forces. The powerful emotions of awe and force that this painting creates, serves as a crystallization of aspects of the Romantic era. It shows as the destruction of the factories in the background and is serves as the starting point of the romantic era.
