Wyl.Period 6.Team6

October 14, 1066 was the day King William conquered England in the Battle of Hastings. With this victory, King William conducted the feudal system which included the knights of chivalry as the foundation. This type of system came with the respect given to the people in higher social classes, like the aristocrats. The aristocrats made sure the economic structure was well balanced. Because of their wealth and creation, the aristocrats were able to influence those around them. They had the most admirable and eminent works, like the creation of the Gothic Movement buildings. Distinguishing and conveying the new idea of light instead of dark was inordinate. The Gothic cathedrals were represented as a wall of light. It was in the great churches and cathedrals that the Gothic style was expressed most effectively, its distinctiveness, which advanced them to appeal to the emotions. In addition, during the Medieval Era, arts of different battles increased the value of the knights of chivalry, and were spread through the class of tradesmen. This class rose from the Church that introduced the Crusades. This era had the best impact and influence on the artists.

  1. In the beginning of your response you mention that the aristocratic class had influence on the economic structure. During the medieval times, it was often the case where the central monarch governed supremely with the aristocratic class right below the monarch. If the monarch was in complete control of the government, where would the aristocracy have its place? You even mention “King William” who was the monarch in early 1000 AD. I am not criticizing your response that you worked so long and hard for but there are some parts where I disagree. Your argument is nicely supported when you mention the foundation upon chivalry established by the king as military might and bravery were essential to the code of chivalry. I do agree with you on the subject of gothic architecture which evolved from the roman era. Roman architecture did in fact place an emphasis on dark aspects while gothic architecture was more light based like your statement “wall of light” and was definitely more decorative. While having an effect on architecture, gothic elements also affected art. Gothic art had a stronger affinity towards realism with an obvious attraction towards stained glass which covered various cathedrals. An influence on chivalry was an important aspect as well. The emphasis on serving others grew dominant in the knight’s code. Serving one’s lord, God, and lady were all important aspects in the composition of chivalry. In conclusion, I would like to say that your post was well researched, thought-out, and presented. Keep up the good work!
