The Victorian Period is known for the prudery and propriety greatly set by Queen Victoria. One can see that the Victorian Period is a clear reaction to the previous Romantic Period and it’s tendencies. A clear example is the Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Within the play, the entire plot and cast carries an unrealistic amount of social etiquette and upper class civility. Overall, such propriety within the play can be greatly contrasted when examining the Romantic novel Wuthering Heights, where the characters express raw emotion and a sense that they are untamed and more one with the chaos of nature. Further examination shows that prudery is also a firm contrast point. Within the Romantic period, emotion the characters’ sexuality were expressed greatly because of the style of the period. Yet when examining the Importance of Being Earnest, the characters are far more prudish and conceal their emotion and sexuality greatly. Further comparing Romantic writing with that of Victorian, the Victorian Period was more rooted in realism as compared to the Romantic’s use of imaginative fantasies. One can compare Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with Wilde’play; Frankenstein required the reader to suspend disbelief in order to attain the clear message of the novel in between the clash of Victor and his monster. Yet Victorian Period writing had clear realistic situations in which several overall messages were rather clear such as the concept of dandyism and how Jack and Algernon portrayed dandy qualities in The Importance of Being Earnest. This piece of writing as very clearly stated ideas, which I commend. But is the the structure and phrasing of the words that bring obscurity. With more focus, and a final read through many errors could have been avoided. The analysis of the Victorian age has very refined, and creative interpretations; and it is clear that a lot of research has been done.
