Contemporary Era Synthesis

            Popular culture is the knowledge of current or up-to-date events.  It is very influential in determining the fashion styles worn and ideologies cherished by society. The most important aspect of “pop culture” is its ability to attract the populace; for people to find a resonating or influential message or form of entertainment. Popular culture inevitably has a significant impact on “popularity” through advertisements, peer pressure, and societal demands. This is portrayed by an artist that has captured the hearts and minds of romantics around the world, Taylor Swift.  Swift has often been criticized for her superficial lyrics and repetitive rhythms.  However, this has not stopped them from contributing to the contemporary era and popular culture.

            From personal experience, my family and friends may not always be there, but Taylor Swift’s words will always resonate in my heart.  Swift’s perspective toward life emphasizes the sensibility of the contemporary era; the idea that entertainment embodies issues that people everywhere can bring their own “personal baggage” and relate to.  Swift epitomizes the contemporary sensibility when she suggests, “you belong with me”.  She stresses the importance of belonging; belonging is a necessity for humans.  As we grow and travel through life, we feel the constant necessity to fit into society.  Not only has Taylor Swift influenced culture musically, but she emphasized popular trends. Swift has reinforced the need for friendships, relationships, and belonging.  Swift’s music is the embodiment of “pop culture” as well as the sensibility of today’s era.  She serves as a constant reminder, that whenever “stakes are high or the water’s rough”, people can seek entertainment that will involve issues of everyday life.
