ash.p2.t8: Greek/Roman synthesis question #2

During the Greek/Roman period many art pieces, including dance, theater, music, etc., reflected the culture of 1,000BC - 449AD. For example, Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, reveals many aspects of ancient Greek life to the audience. The Odyssey shows the importance of the Gods the ancient Greeks. In the Odyssey, are responsible for how long it takes for Ulysses and his men to get back to Ithaca. Ancient Greeks believed that there was a God of life, of death, and even wine, anger one of these Gods, or Goddesses, and many misfortunes will come your way. Ancient Greeks believed that the Gods had complete control, and if you broke any of their rules or angered them, they would change your life for the worst. The Greek society also valued intelligence and cleverness. Throughout the epic this beloved trait of every Greek was portrayed by Odysseus, the protagonist. In the epic, Odysseus’ quick thinking always helps the crew get out of danger. For instance, Odysseus and his men were trapped in a cave with a Cyclops, and Odysseus’ cunning got them out to safety. The ancient Greeks also valued loyalty. This portrayed by Penelope staying loyal to her husband and not remarrying, and also by Odysseus never wanting to leave Penelope. Throughout Homer’s piece, many important ancient Greek values such as hospitality, pride, and fate are promoted greatly. Homer’s style of this tale, written in books not chapters, helps convey to the audience how life was during the Greek/Roman Era. Whether it is the morals he portrayed or the poetic language he used, every reader, or young student for when this was shared orally, learns what it means to be a strong Greek.

  1. What you said is very true. The Greeks had a high value in their gods, as well as having a strong belief in loyalty.
Although we believe Penelope was not too loyal to Ulysses, because she was still looking at suitors while Ulysses was gone.
While Greeks value pride a lot, we feel it could affect their own judgement. Sometimes are too are prideful, and won't notice their own wrongs.
