Asherp4t3 Victorian Synthesis #2

2. As the Romantic Era came to a close, the Victorian Era eased into effect as the sensibility of a new time took over. Just like all the eras before it, the Victorian Era was a reaction to its previous period. During the Romantic Era, expression was emphasized through music in the use of extravagant dynamics and lyrical melodies. Literary works also stressed freedom of expression in works such as Frankenstein and Wuthering Hights which introduced the gothic novel and cut any remaining ties to the Church. However, after three periods of discovery in the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Romantic Eras, this form of expression in the search for one’s self reached its climax in the Romantic Era and the masses reverted to a highly prudish lifestyle. There are a couple of factors that led to this change, one of which was the crowning of Queen Victoria. Because she was widely popular and influential, many followed her styles of prudishness. Another factor was that great writers such as Charles Dickens focused more on society in novels such as Hard Times and A Tale of Two Cities instead of expressiveness.

  1. Interesting analysis. I agree that the Victorian Era provoked more social criticism because the era itself was so hypocritically elitist and pretentious. The Romantic Era focused more on individuals, and in the literature from that period that your group cited, on the flights of different people.
