Macbeth Essay Period 3- Asher

Morgan Palma

Period 3

In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, he focuses on man’s fate and how that forces man into a state of madness. That madness drives them to ensure that their fate will come true. Lady Macbeth plays an important role in Macbeth and through her actions and comments she succeeds in fulfilling the witches’ predictions.

Lady Macbeth is an important character in the plot of Macbeth due to her influence that she holds over her husband. Throughout the entire play she is always pressuring Macbeth to do things in order for them to follow the prophecies. Without her actions and words the play would be incomplete. She added to the madness that drove Macbeth insane. If it had not been for her persistence, certain actions probably wouldn’t have occurred. For instance the night that Lady Macbeth and Macbeth kill King Duncan she makes the comment “but I shame to wear a heart so white.” In which she is basically calling Macbeth a coward and questioning his manliness. All of her actions lead to the fate Macbeth has set himself up for. Together as a team, both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth fall into their destined fate by making it come true due to their greed for power. Lady Macbeth’s actions and words contributed to the downfall of them and led them to their own tragic fate.

Throughout Macbeth, Lady Macbeth drives the plot forward using her persuasive language to convince Macbeth to do what is necessary to gain power. The witches’ predictions gave Macbeth hope that he would soon come to power and lead a life of glory. In learning this information Lady Macbeth already plots out her devious plans. Her words “Hie thee thither, that I may pour my spirits in thine ear.” all indicate for her future plans. All of Lady Macbeth’s planning help keep the play suspenseful and lead the audience to pay close attention and follow along as their doomed fate unravels. This all connects in the end as they all meet their death and fate is finally complete.

Fate is a huge drive throughout Macbeth. Fate drives the characters in the play to do things that they would normally not have done otherwise. It also leads them to become corrupt with greed and destroy their lives and everyone’s around them. Lady Macbeth plays a large roll in the downfall of Macbeth and how through the knowledge acquired on their fate led to the destruction of everything. Fate is not something to be messed around with and this play shows a perfect example of what fate causes people to do and become.
