The Misanthrope Essay -- wyl.p6.t3 -- Jenny Zhan

In the play of Le Misonthrope by Moliere, it mainly described about the relationship Alcest had with Celimene. Others came to judge their relationship and tries to change it in a way and it worked. In the end Celimene rejected Alceste's proposal. The character Arsinoe brings out the thoughtful laughter of the play. She tried many ways to turn Alceste against Celimene so she can have him. Some of her ways were by offering Alceste things or by saying Celimene have done something bad.

One of the way Arsinoe tried to get Alcest on her side was by offering him a position at court. That was something not everyone can get and it was right in front of him but he rejected the offer. He picked Celimene over it. Their love was stronger. Arsinoe wasn't happy about it but she had something else hidden under her sleeves. This laughter is "thoughtful" because it shows that sometimes when you want something you have to work for it. Nothing is free in the world. It also tells the readers that love is a very strong bond between two people. Its not something you can trade for with wealth and riches. This contributes to the meanings of the work by showing how strong the bond is between Alceste and Celimene.

Another way Arsinoe tried to use was by telling Alceste that Celimene have been lying to him and she has proof. When someone tells you your loved one has been lying, you will wonder if its true or not and want proof. So of course Alceste agreed to go see. This allowed him to fall into her trap. This is a thoughtful laughter because Arsinoe hit just the right spot on Alceste. She knew if one of them were being unfaithful, then it will break them apart. People now days still use this method to get their crush to leave their loved ones. Once they get jealous, there is no turning back. Things will eventually fall apart. This contributes to the meaning of the work by adding more conflict to their relationship that Alceste has to solve.

In conclusion, the play Le Misonthrope by Mollere had a very funny plot. Everyone was either trying to help Alceste and Celimene or trying to break them apart. Arsinoe was an old woman who liked Alceste a little too much. She was willing to help him get a position in court but Alceste's love for Celimene was strong so he did not accept. Then she tells him Celimene lied to him and everything went down hill from there. The way Arsinoe was acting is still very relevant today. People still try to get each other jealous to steal their loved ones so its nothing new.
