Romantic Era Synthesis Asher P4 T7

Whereas the Renaissance period followed after the dark medieval era and was strongly influenced by the church, the Romantic Era followed after the Industrial Period and was strongly influenced by the will to counter the darkness of the industrial period. Many of the works from the Renaissance period were religious but those from the Romantic period are secular. The works from the Romantic period take out God from the picture of nature and view nature as an almost living entity itself. One work of art in which there is a secular rather than religious representation of man is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. This work of literature is a classic example of secular representation of man from the Romantic Era. As well as being the very first science fiction book, its story boldly takes the power of God and gives it to man. Frankenstein has a dark gothic tone that reveals the dark nature of nature itself. Frankenstein also shows the freedom from the restrictions of classicism and the traditional rigid order of society.
