Romanticism Era Synthesis Question

The Romantic Era focused on embracing the individual. They were sympathetic toward individual liberty. The people of this era had fears of not being remembered and making an impact on society. As society shifted the peasants and middle class became educated and literate. The aristocrats were pushed out and being overcome. A shift from agriculture to industry represents the immense shift this era undertook. The farmers struggled and competed for business. Soon a revolt from the middle class and less educated started. They turned away from current society and from the poets of the time, who focused on witty form and rhymes. Poets such as Moliere were disliked. Society wanted straightforwardness and to become upfront, especially with feelings. A vast amount of the era accentuated feelings and focused on a deeper meaning. A literary piece by Emily Brontë called “Wuthering Heights” reflected such a time. The story is based on the love of a powerful and scornful man named Heathcliff and his lover Cathy. Heathcliff represents the middle to poor class of society, being uneducated and a servant. He then come into fortune by pure will, representing the societal shift in the era. Both Heathcliff and Cathy focus on themselves and their love for one another, reaching into a deeper meaning to the individual. The center of attention lies with the two characters feelings toward one another and how they have to overcome society, representing the revolts during the era. The essence of the Romantic Era is captured in the novel, making it a piece that stands as the ultimate representation of the time.
