Wylie Period 1 Team 5 (Destinee)

In the time of Romanticism, people had had enough of class and status and turned rather to embrace the importance of the common man. Romantic music was meant to be imaginative, whimsical, and filled with emotion. It displayed the feelings and musings of the everyday, or common man. It was music that anyone could relate to and enjoy, not just the ones with wealth or property. Some notable composers of the day include Shubert, Tchaikovsky, and Strauss. These composers worked with piano, symphony, and operas to inspire fellow writers, artists, and the everyday civilian. Art from the romantic period was distinct in nature, focusing on fantastical topics, gothic and supernatural subjects, and everyday scenes with whimsical spins. The latter are especially applicable to the topic because they focused on the beauty in a seemingly nondescript activity. This enhanced the beauty and emotion behind the actions people take from day to day to get by. In the romantic period, emotions are key, and these artworks draw from us feelings of adoration for nature and an enjoyment of the simple pleasures of life. Furthermore, writings of the time encouraged the common man to push beyond his boundaries, testing the battle between what's reality and what's fantasy. Examples of such works include Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, and Moby Dick.

  1. Your analysis of music especially in this period we believe is very relevant to this era as music composed during this era is some of the most iconic. Your assertion that an individual’s emotions are the focus of this era, we see to be the absolute truth. The Romantic Period was very much a reaction to the previous period, the Renaissance. The Romantic period very much focused on one's individual, intimate, and personal journey. Much of the literature dealt with conflicting emotions, battling view points; man vs. self. This period also strayed slightly away from religion, a topic that was very much focused on in earlier periods. The Romantic period was a period of self exploration. While other era’s focused on religion and one’s relationship with God or the church this era fully explored one’s relationship with themselves and their feelings. Overall, this era fully embraced the inspiration one finds in themselves and you did an excellent job portraying this.
