Romantic Era Synthesis Question P.2 T.8

The movement during the Romantic Era was one of a great change in attitudes towards spirituality and awoke a new sense of purpose in life, one to use and rely on imagination and express the natural beauty of the world in all artistic and scholarly works. As the world evolved from agriculture based lifestyle to a booming industrialized mindset and society, artists interpreted new meanings of life and acquired a style that exposed the beauties and wonders of nature as well as adopting some gothic aspects. From the new outlook on life and straying away from the religious portrayal in their work, people began to rely on earth’s true features, not altered by man, for inspiration. Because of this, people were moved into a period of self awakening and reflection with nature as somewhat of a therapeutic guide.
For example, this secular representation of common man and life is portrayed through impressionism paintings such as Caspar David Friedrich’s 1818 Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, which expresses deep emotions through his brush strokes as he depicts a man on a rock looking off into the fog with the tops of trees off in the distance. His painting also represents one of the gothic aspects of using desolate locations and dark tones.
Although art was a common way to represent this Romantic change in attitudes and style, influential writers emerged and described this time with their interpretations as well. Ann Radcliffe, M. L. Lewis, sisters Charlotte and Emily Bronte are just a handful of the famous authors that arose from this era. Their works tended to have gothic themes and reliance upon human emotion and nature.
Music and dance also played a large role in the Romantic Era, ballet became immensely popular and songs that uplifted the individual were created. The ballet in particular became a key way for a dancer to use natural, long, fluid movements to express oneself.
Whether through art, music, dance, or literature, Romantic ideals and ideas that ennobled man were displayed throughout the word in the Romantic Era as people began to view the world differently as it grew and evolved into a bustling industrialized time.

  1. Our team noticed that your points were very insightful and you elaborated on all of them. This was indeed a good synthesis to read. One of the things we thought you could have improved on was the music and art section. Compared to the rest of the synthesis, that section seemed rushed. Also, double check your grammar before submitting it to Asher next time because there were grammatical mistakes throughout the synthesis.
